  4. You don't say how big they are!

  5. I think this question is funny. I can just imagine what went through your head and in what order. Ok, la, la, la, your digging in the garden. First, you see the eggs and freak out? – surprised? – intrigue? – interest? Then comes the holy cow, what is it? – maybe a little fright? – but most of all, what on earth could have done this?

They are more than likely turtle eggs but depending on where you live, could be lizard or some other land laying egg nest.

WHATEVER YOU DO – DO NOT TURN OR MOVE THE EGGS. They are not like bird eggs that need to be turned on a regular basis so the chick inside does not stick to the inside of the shell. If the position of the eggs of animals that lay their eggs in the soil is disturbed – THE GROWING EMBRIOS WILL DIE. Cover them and leave them the way you found them.

When scientists collect such eggs they use a marker of some sort to mark the position of the egg – so when it is placed in their collection containers, they are put down in the EXACT same position as they were found.

If you haven’t disturbed the nest or eggs, keep an eye on them and you may see WHATEVER they are, emerge. But be patient, if they are turtle eggs and have been laid too late in the season, they will either hatch in the Spring or hatch in the Fall and over-winter in the nest – not to emerge until next spring.
