Question:

What are these shrimp-like creatures found on a pier piling?

Found in Virginia Beach on a pier piling - in the water AND on the piling. They looked like elongated shrimp crossed with a bug, and had antenae that looked like a "V" on top of their heads. Again, they were under the water as well as out of the water on the piling, crawling over barnacles. Here is the best picture I could get:

  1. They are almost certainly amphipods.  On pilings and floating docks you get a lot of caprellid amphipods in addition to the more shrimp-looking ones.

    Do two searches in google images.  For one, type in "amphipod" and for the second type in "caprellid" and compare what you find to what you saw.
