Question:

What are these things that are being built along the highway?

There has been construction in the area for awhile but these just popped up in the last couple days. There is one facing each direction every couple hundred yards. What are they?

  1. There are 2 possibilities -

    1) It's possibly a small radar unit which displays your speed as you near it. They're active in northern Virginia area now. Even seen a few on back country roads!

    2) A new controllable speed limit sign system is being tried experimentally to adjust traffic speed in cases of slowdowns ahead due to road work or traffic accident, instead of static 65 MPH signs. Trying to prevent accidents and speed run-ups on other cars as you approach a slow-down area. Variable Speed Limit, or VSL, sign. If it's on a main Interstate , I'd suspect VSL.

  2. uhh i think they have those around here, they tell you ur speed to get you to slow down in accident prone areas.
