These tiny nuts that someone bought for me from India are real yummy, brownish in color, they are tiny like barley seeds but soft in bite and texture- I am told they are mainly used for garnishing Indian sweets, made with milk - like Indian rice pudding- when I asked what they were called I was told 2 versions-Cherongee, and Charoli-

I have tried to get these in many places but not successful-

Please can someone given me the English name for them? Thanks so much

  1. Try Indian grocery stores, hope you will find there

  2. its not sesame seeds. 'Chiraunji' are nuts of the tree Buchanania latifolia. it does not have an English name i think, but is very popular in India. widely used in rich sweets and desserts. its an expensive nut. i have no clue where u can get it outside india, but in india u'll find it in abundance. u need to visit India for that, and lots of other beautiful and exotic stuff...so plan ur trip !!!! : )

  3. In general, chironji nuts are used to garnish Indian sweets. For more information, read the article on chironji by Pankaj Oudhia in Botanical.com.
