Question:

What are these welts my 8 year old son has?

Several weeks ago, my son developed some strange looking welts (a group of welts that are the sizes of nickels in a circular pattern) only on one of his buttocks (I noticed them after he took a bath). At first, I thought it was a reaction to the Sudafed Shower Soothers that I had used earlier in the day, but it has been several weeks now, and the welts are still there, and don't even look better or healed at all. They are not bothering him...no itching or anything.

Then, he tells me this week, that there is a spot on his shoulder that is itching him. It is the same size as the others, but not red....just has little bumps encircling the diameter of the welt. This one is itching him. I have been applying cream to it, but nothing has changed.

Does anyone have a clue as to what it could be before I make the doctor's appt. ? Any suggestions that I could research will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

  1. It sounds like it could be ring worm. Research that. There should be pictures online that you could compare them to.

  2. see your doctor

  3. Ringworm? Are they rough to touch? It usually makes a circular pattern exacly like how you are describing. It spreads very easily, and it doesn't have to be itchy.

It's easy to cure, just a little antifungal cream from the doc. Make sure you wash everything in your house really well and notify your son's teacher. He could have easily picked it up from one of the other kids or spread it just as easily.

  4. You should take him to a doctor. It could be a bug bite. Possibly a cyst. When my cousin was 2, she had a cyst, and it got infected. Turned out to be staph, and she ended up in the hospital for a few days, and had to have it lanced. Your best bet is to just take him to the doctor or dermatologist.

  5. Several weeks ago!!!! Jesus Christ.

  6. Ringworm, as suggested by many others. Wikipedia is excellent - link below:

  7. Could it be ringworm..?

  8. Oh that could be ringworm. Ringworm is contagious. You need a fungal cream for it - you can get it at the druggist. It takes a long time to go away - put cream on it everyday until gone and encourage him not to scratch as it is contagious.

  9. welts the size of a nickel in circles.. look up ringworm that would be the first thing that comes to mind.  But, there are many things that look like ringworm, and are not actually ringworm.. only a doctor can really tell you by doing a skin test.. but most creams they prescribe for ringworm will usually clear up whatever else it could be.

It may itch.. but it may not.

Definitely make a doctor's appointment regardless of what you think it is.. because it can always be something more serious or something that needs attention. He has had it long enough that it probably WONT go away on its own.

  10. He has ringworm. You can treat it with an over the counter medication. Ask your pharmacist to recommend something. If you don't treat it it could get infected and he'll need antibiotics. Ringworm is not caused by worms but is a fungus. Athletes foot is a type of ringworm.

  11. It sounds like Ringworm to me as well.  You will need to take him to the doctor since it is a fungal infection and can only be cleared up with a prescription.

  12. sounds like ringworm, which almost all kids get at some time or other from playing outside in the dirt, I don't know any specific meds to use, but my mom always put bleach on them and it went away in a few days

  13. Well, I'm currently in the "parasite" chapter of "The Hypochondiachs Pocket Guide to Horrible Diseases You Probably Already Have" so you don't want my opinion LOL

Take him to the dr. It could be bites, it could be an allergic reaction...

it could be bed bugs or pinworm or ringworm... omg lol

The dr will know though and be able to treat it

  14. I am going to guess ringworm, it's a fungle infection and not actually worms. It's similar to athaletes foot and treated the same. I would get him to the doctor, it will spread and you can catch it. It's important to keep the area covered while it's being treated

If you have ringworm on your arms, legs, or chest, you may see small, red spots that grow into large rings.
