  1. Maggots are from flies, sounds like you have "mealy worms"

They are beneficial to soil, so let them be !

  2. Perhaps they are grubs?

Thats about the only thing I can think of that might resemble meal worms. If they are grubs they will most likely become japanese beetles after they have eaten all the roots they can find. There are several plant friendly treatments for them though. You can just go to a home and garden store and ask around there for grub killer ^^

good luck and I hope I helped

  3. Take one to your local plant nursery and ask them what it is.  If it's a pest, ask them how to kill it.

  4. There are many kinds of worms. A worm with a stripe on it's side might be a grub. See another photo of one here:  http://www.flickr.com/photos/rowan_photo...

They tend to curl up like this one if exposed out in the open or poked at with a stick.

  5. They could be several different kinds of worms, grubs, larva, etc. depending on the soil and plants where you found them.  They are probably eating the roots of whatever is growing there like flowers, vegetables, lawn.

Try doing a Google search using the terms grub, larva, root, pest and use the Google image search to see photos.
