  1. I think the economic situation will do the most to curtail the growth of sprawl.  look at where the housing values have collapsed, it is almost always in the suburbs with the urban core real estate still holding its value. (except in places like detroit)

I see many municipalities looking favorably on mixed use development, which is usually higher in density than you typically see in suburbs.  I think single use zoning is becoming a thing of the past.

I think forcing people to drive their cars miles just to get out of the residential neighborhood and doing any errands or going to work etc... is just irresponsible and now we're seeing it isn't so valuable for people to have their own back yard now that fuel is so expensive.

so as usual, the market forces are doing the work.

  2. god knows.

  3. See the reference.

  4. Who is "THEY" and how arrogant it is for people to tell others where they can and can't live?

If you are looking for a place where "THEY" tell people where to live, how many children they can have, what jobs you may have, which olympic sport you can compete in, then China is the place for you!

I read in horror and disgust about the girl who wanted to be a ballet dancer but instead was forced to become a ping pong player because "They" decided she would be better at it, or the mother who was forced to train far from her 18 month old and NEVER saw her for 12 months (except via web cam - that's the same  . . . right?), or the young diver who could not eat dinner for a year to maintain a 66 lb frame!

All for the good of the country.  That is the true story of communism - we saw it constantly when the USSR was alive and well -- now a new generation can see it all again.

You want to live downtown - get all your friends and try it!

Someone doing something about urban sprawl (ie limiting our freedom to live where we'd like)?

    I hope not!
