I would guess, by looks of some friends tables, JUNK MAIL, BILLS, OLD NEWSPAPERS AND MAGAZINES !!!!!!!!!! Oh, I almost forgot OLD CANDY WRAPPERS AND PAPER CUPS !!!!!!!!!!

Depends on the person.  I have tables that have books and "knick knacks" (brick-a-brack, ornament, figurine, objet d'art, bauble, decoration, trinkets) on them.

My kitchen table is being used as my "office" desk and has a lamp, 5 inch B&W TV, notebooks, pens, can of pop, old newspaper, a file folder with Yahoo! legal "stuff", and a portion of my overhead light cover than requires repair.
