Normandy is one of the vastest regions of France. You do not say which part of Normandy you are visiting or which time of the year you are going to, how long you are staying and how you are travelling, and this will make a vast difference.

Coastal Normandy stretches for miles and it has beaches, cliffs and harbours, old fashioned elegant resorts and picturesque isolated spots. The two essential places to go to because they are awsome are Mont Saint -Michel, and Etretat that has the sentational cliff-arch painted by so many artists of the Impressionist School. If you are into watersports there are various facilities for canoeing, wind-surfing, water skiing etc..along the coast. Deauville, Trouville and Cabourg, with their casinos, are essentially the  playground of rich Parisian socialites and the refuge of permed septuagenerian ladies taking Bichon poodles for walkies. If you are interested in the second world war, there are the landing beaches, several war museums, and moving cemetaries with hundreds of allied graves, the striking American cemetary with its white marble tombstones, and the equally sad German one where one realises that some of these soldiers were sixteen year old kids.

The interior is lush and pastoral, with the exception of the Cotentin peninsula at the tip of which lies Cherbourg where it is wild and rugged. There are numerous castles and gardens to visit, quaint villages with beamed thatched cottages at the summit of which irises are grown. Along the Seine you can follow the impressionist trail and visit Giverny where Monet lived and did the famous waterlily paintings.

Rouen and Bayeux are musts. Though an industrial town the centre of Rouen is magnificent. Not only does it have wonderful Gothic churches and cathedral, amazing little streets with medieval houses and an stunning clock tower , but it is the place where Joan of Arc was burnt alive and there is a remarkable museum on the square where she was executed. There is a wealth of museums and art galleries, and a wonderful  and colouful shopping area, redolent of baked croissants and  fresh bread smells.

Bayeux, though less impressive, has the famous emboidered tapestry depictings the Norman invasion and the battle of Hastings yards and yards long, and fascinating.

I could go on for hours because there are so many things to do and see. All I can add is that Normandy merits more than a fleeting visit and one can go back there  time and time again and never be bored.
