What are those black bands that surfers wear around their ankle???

Question

I've seen some surfers wearing this thick black band around their ankle....usually their left....i think...also the ripcurl models wear them in their swimwear so hmmm...this is what i mean...

Haha, I believe it's the band connecting the board to the surfer.

In case he wipes out, the board won't float out to sea.

first thought: i'd say the velcro band attached to the leash (which is attached to the board)

second: ankle bracelet?

i dont think its the leash youre talking about. i think it is one of those things that helps you come back to the surface when you fall. like a little floatation device. but i have never worn one before and i surf a lot

God are these other guys dumb they just need to look at the picture...But yeah I'm pretty sure that is just an ankle bracelet I haven't personally seen other surfers wear them and I don't wear them.
