What are those black bars called on the front of many SUV's?

Are they called "crash bars"? I know they are called that on motorcycles, but what about autos? Thank you.

  1. On an SUV they're referred to as a "Bull Bar", or a "Roo Bar" if you're in Australia. The ones on the front of a police cruiser or tow truck are commonly called "Push Bars" or "Push Bumpers", since that's their purpose.

  6. It's called a push bar. I have one on my Explorer.

    You will often also see them on police cars. They can be used to push another vehicle or obstruction out of the way and they are commonly used in a tactic called a PIT maneuver.  People also use them to secure winches to for off-roading purposes.

    A push bar can do a lot of damage if you rear end someone and have one of those on your vehicle.

    They have a lot of uses.
