they are centipedes (sp) or millipedes (sp) and they aren't that big, you only see them in the summer and spring. Does anyone know what I'm talking about?

  1. House Centipede, and they freak me out.

  2. Chilopoda

  3. Caterpillar?

  4. If you look at them and see semi-flat segments with two legs per segment (one on each side) sticking out to the side with sharp points like stingers, they are centipedes (in Spanish, ciempies or cienpies).

If you look at them and see a mostly round form with many hairy-looking legs per segment, pointing mostly straight down, they are millipedes (Spanish milpies), also called ''thousand-legs.''  Millipedes are usually bicolored (redish and yellowish or black & yellow in my part of the world), while centipedes are brownish like scorpions when smaller or younger and become dark maroon or black when bigger and older.

Millipedes will not hurt you, but stink when squashed.  Centipedes sting and bite, with a pain equivalent to a large scorpion.

  5. It really depends on where do you live but in Ohio, it is usually millipedes that you will find in the dirt.
