Question:

What are those butterfly pastries called?

The left side is a mirror of the right, and each side consists of crunchy flaky dough rolled out very thin and made into an oval spiral. The cookies are cut about a half an inch thick, several inches around, and are sweet. I've always heard them called "butterfly cookies", but I can't find a recipe anywhere.

Thanks!

  1. People make these using puff pastry dough.

You can do just about anything to them, from adding a cinnamon/sugar layer to preserves of any sort. Rolling

them from opposite sides, slice and bake. It's sort of

fun to just experiment. Buy a package of puff pastry and

fun with it! Bake as directed on the package.

  2. Palmiers!

They are so yummy with coffee!

I've used epicurious.com's recipe with repeat success.  So easy, yet SO fancy-looking that I feel (sometimes) ashamed to take all the compliments when I serve them at get-togethers!

  3. I've always known them as Elephant Ears.

  4. Palmiers.

The whole foods grocery had those with their freshly baked pastries and muffins and bagels last time I saw.

Find a bakery that sells vie de france products...they have the best palmiers.  They make plain and almond.

I used to work in a little french bakery that sold palmiers, so I know how to make them.  Pal-mee-YAYS
