What are those little Spanish sandwiches called?

I was in Spain at the beginning of the summer and we went to this restaurant where they gave you a menu (looked sort of like a sushi menu) and you ordered these relatively tiny sandwiches with meat/fish/vegetables on them.

Does anyone know what these are called?

  1. They are called bocadillos (or bocatas).

  2. It sounds like you had montaditos.

Montaditos are typical from the Basque Country, it's a small piece of bread with something on top (meat, fish, seafood, vegetables, etc.)

Tapas is a much more generic word, it can be anything you have in small quantities.

  3. tapas

  4. Well, it sounds like you went to a tapas bar, which is where they serve small plates, kind of like appetizers.

  5. I think they're called tapas

  6. Canapé

They are pretty common in cocktails where I live.
