There are some houses in Leiden, Holland, which have a small garden in the back, which is like having a bit of the countryside right in the middle of the city. Dutch people have a specific name for it, but I don't remember it. does anyone know?

  1. SHACOCKA

  2. A little garden is called: een tuin. A very small garden is called: een tuintje.

  3. garlands

  4. Flemish gardens

To this period belongs the garden full of a proud and artistic charm

  5. My Dutch partner, who was born in The Netherlands and lived in many areas of the country, tells me that the name for a little garden attached to a house is "tuin". A really tiny garden is a "tuintje". (And my experience is that a tiny garden in Holland is _really_ tiny.)

She tells me that "hofjes" is not the name of a type of garden, but the term for an arrangement of small houses arranged around a central courtyard built by an organisation (often a church) to house widows, old folk or other people in need of charitable assistance.
