They are very very small, they sting, they are very itchy and annoying... When you kill them they separate into little, dry segments.... Does this help? I'd like a scientific name with that too please. :)

  1. From Wikipedia:

"Gnat (pronounced /næt/, "nat") is a colloquial name for any of various small insects in the order Diptera and specifically within the suborder Nematocera. This suborder represents the more primitive members of the Dipteran order but still contains several very notable and important families such as the Chironomidae (non-biting midges) and the Culicidae (mosquitoes). Other families include the Tipulidae (crane flies), Bibionidae (hairflies), Ceratopogonidae (biting midges), Cecidomyiidae (gall midges), Simuliidae (black flies), and others.

The one you are asking about is probably Simuliidae.

  2. You pretty much described a lot of animals here.

    Gnats, maybe?

It'd probably help if we knew what area you lived in.
