  1. Body language is one way to tell the difference between fear or anger related aggression.  Their tails and ears indicate how they're feeling.

    A confidently aggressive cat will continue to eyeball his rival, whereas a fearful cat will be more likely to look away first.

    A frightened cat will usually hiss, but an angry cat will resort to growling or caterwauling.  (Like humans when they're angry, cats' voices get louder and deeper).
