  1. Colin M is quite right, though ballast tanks should never be kept part full (due to free surface effect) Ballast tanks would be sounded only to confirm that they are empty.

  2. Most ship tanks do not contain gauges. Tanks are used for ballast and stowage. You want to make sure that something is not leaking into or out of a tank.

  3. Tank soundings are taken for various reasons:

Establishing  the quantity of fuel/fresh water in the tanks, for instance.

Working out ballast & balance calculations.

Establishing whether there is a leak.

  4. 1. To determin if there is a leak into a tank from the sea or between tanks.

    2. To determin the quantity of liquid in the tank for inventory or stability purposes.

    3. To determin the rate that a tank is filling or emptying to determin when it might be near full or empty.

  5. I'm not a boat expert, but I own a narrow boat, and the hull is made of sheet steel, surveyors use a sound probe to measure the thickness of the steel hull to check its condition.

    hope this helps.???
