Question:

What are thrush symptoms?

My baby has had a white tongue for about 2 weeks now. I didn't think much of it, until she also developed a diaper rash that looks splotchy and doesn't seem to be going away. Today, I noticed a white film on her upper lip and I tried to wipe it away and it would not go away. Also, for the past 2 weeks, she has been spitting up A LOT (2-5 times per hour and from one bottle to the other - more than normal and seems to have a lot of mucous mixed with it). Could the spitting up be related, or something different?

My baby is 4 months old.

Thank you!

  1. I believe that if your baby had thrush, the tongue would bleed when you try to wipe the white film away and your baby would be refusing to eat. Thrush is painful and therefore interferes with the feeding process.

As for the spitting up, it isn't a sign of thrush and I would recommend you see your doctor. My little one had the same problem (the spitting up 2-5 times an hour). Our doc suggested similac alimentum and it worked wonders. No more spitting up, crying, or white tongue!

  2. Yes, that definitely sounds like oral thrush and she probably has a yeast rash on her buttocks/groin too.  It's pretty common to have both the oral thrush and the yeast diaper rash at the same time.  You need to call her doctor, she needs the oral "Nystatin" solution for her mouth and a special cream for the yeast rash.  It will most likely not go away on it's own.  It can cause feeding problems, it usually isn't very comfortable.  The spitting up is definitely related.

If you're breastfeeding, you might want to make sure you don't have a yeast rash on your b*****s too.  Very common.

  3. If there is white spots in the babies mouth that won't wipe off then its mostly thrush. My pedi told me that thrush isn't thrush unless it reaches the cheeks and gums. If its on the tongue then its just milk residue.

If you notice that she doesn't want to eat as much then it is thrush. Babies lose their appetiate because its painful.

I would call the pedi. Good luck
