what are some places to go/do over the summer, that is CHEAP?

Costa Rica...In August of 2007 I went there for a week and had a blast. Very natural and relaxing.  I stayed in the Guanacaste region, but I hear is great all over.. even for backpacking if you are interested in that.

P.S.. the exchange rate is great as well

I think that its funny that she is asking for cheap places, and most of the answers I've seen to this question, is only cheap if you are a millionaire. But to answer your question, any place in florida would be nice, or maybe go to Texas, to like six flags, or something.

In the Philippines, chose the islands BOHOL, CEBU, Davao, Boracay and Palawan, also. try to Banaue and ilocos Region.

Cape Cod, The Statue of Liberty, The UN, Many museums in NYC, The Smithsonian in DC is free.  

You can generally get to a beach for little money, or the mountains, hiking is relatively inexpensive.  Check out the Sierra Club's local groups, or one of those nature groups.  They always let non-members join their hikes for a very small fee.  

Albany, NY generally has about a dozen or so free concerts in several locations about the city, so does NYC.  I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of locations have free concerts.  

Get the local paper, that's always good for cheap entertainment.

I would suggest going to www.expedia.com and looking at the "last minute deals". You can get hotels from $30 - $200 in many different cities (orlando, las vegas, los angeles, boston, new york, miami, etc.) $30 for a hotel room!
