What are town water towers for ?

We see them all over USA , in almost every town there is a water tower. What are they for ?

They're mostly to provide the water pressure for your water service.  They store some small (relatively) amount of water, but the main purpose is to provide the pressure.  Pumps keep the tank full and the tank provides the pressure.  They're slowly going away as pumps can now do the job of providing the pressure.

Water pressure and it keeps water in reserve , ready for peak use. Also lets you know what town you are nearing.

Also a good target for school kids to prank paint.
