What are trace calories?

i bought a "no calorie" food and under the ingredientds there was an asterisk (*) saying contains "trace calories" what are they?

  1. Trace calories are calories that are in such a small amt. per serving that they are allowed to say that there are zero calories in it.


  2. Trace calories would be the calories naturally found in some of the ingredients that don't really add up to more than what you would expend in eating the food, but they have to mention that there are some calories in the food product on the label legally. Basically, it's pretty much impossible to have a food that literally contains no calories, so they have to come up for a name for the calories that are there so that they can list the food as "no calorie" and still be technically telling the truth.
