  1. It was another step towards victory over France in the Seven Years War. Britain gained the whole of Canada and forced France to give up it's territories east of the Mississippi.

    However, it cost Britain quite a large proportion of its income, in fact pushing it into debt which it decided to combat, quite understandably, by taxing it's American colonists whom they had been defending. The problem being that with the removal of the threat of French invasion the British had also removed the main incentive for the colonists to remain part of the Empire.
