  1. Phonics and whole language.  If I might add some others, please let me.  Modeling good reading, patience, repetition, patience, leveled readers, patience, repetition, patience, repetition.  

    I wasn't putting repetition and patience to be sarcastic, but teaching reading requires a lot of patience and repetition.


  2. Phonics and whole language.  Between the two the only one that really works is phonics.  When they stopped teaching phonics and switched to whole language we were bringing up a generation of kids who could not read at a basic level.

  4. Phonics and whole-language.  Of course, there's  a spectrum of using these two methods, ranging from each one separately to a combination.  Personally,l I like whole language (reading "natural" texts opposed to structured, like d**k and Jane) in combination with phonics strategies.
