  1. huge cables that rthe tail hook connects to when you land then it stops it

  2. Aside from the tailhook and cable system, carriers also have a net barrier used or emergencies. If an aircraft is damaged and cannot land conventionally, they'll set up this large net that is attached to a set of cables. It's set up across the flight deck to stop an aircraft. It wraps around the front section of the plane, bringing it to a stop hopefully in repairable condition. These methods mentioned here are the only ways currently used to recover conventional fixed wing aircraft.

  3. It takes a combination of two items to makes this happen.

1st - on the carrier deck will be a series of steel cables strung across the deck.  The cables are attached to hydraulic cylinders to slow the aircraft.

2nd - the aircraft needs an Arresting Hook (tail hook), which is located in the tail of the aircraft to drop and catch the cable.

  4. an arresting cable or net

  5. There are 4 cables strung across the deck perpendicular to the landing strip, the tailhook on the planes will catch the third cable on a perfect landing, the cables use the same steam that launches the planes to tension the cable and stop the plane.

  6. Big-azz cables that are strung across the deck and hooked to hydraulic mechanisms that allow it to pull out from under the deck. When the plane lands, the tail hook snags the cable and yanks it out from under the deck, and the plane stops. read this page. There are some good pictures of the arresting cables, tailhooks, and other things.
