  1. Many individuals doing individual things will still leave large rivers taking millions of tons of water straight into the sea while passing through parched lands.

Many of the important things that must be done to use water wisely are going to be things that individual water users can not do. We need to know what needs to be done, and organize to get it done. These society wide projects have enormous inertia and reasonable resistance. When we propose to store water on someones land because we need the water stored, we should expect resistance. We should expect to have to demonstrate that this is the best solution. So studying and remaining open to alternate ideas is a critical need for hydrology.

  2. Eat less meat and fewer animal products.  A pound of meat takes 2500-6000 pounds of water, a pound of wheat takes 60.

Plus: "Energy-intensive U.S. factory farms generated 1.4 billion tons of animal waste in 1996, which, the Environmental Protection Agency reports, pollutes American waterways more than all other industrial sources combined."

  3. Simple ones - don't leave the water running while you are brushing your teeth or shaving. Only wash large loads of laundry. Take showers not baths.

Only water your lawn once a week or landscape with plants that require very little water.

Larger steps are to get involved in community efforts to conserve water and petition businesses to change their practices that waste water. One place to begin would be restaurants that often waste tremendous amounts of water.

    Research , research, research.

  4. don't leave it running when brushing your teeth, do a sinkload of dishes....umm that's all I can think of ; ]

  5. Also some useful (and easy) ways to reduce the amount of water you use (and am so excited that you ask..good to see people taking care of our lovely little Earth.)

If you have a dishwasher...fill it as much as you can, move things around in there and make it all fit!

--if no dishwasher, then use a bucket in the sink when you wash dishes and use the water from the bucket to water plants and things.

Also...while taking a shower keep it quick..and although it might be a little less welcoming, use cold water, its good for you and it really wakes you up!

Some more dramatic changes you can make include re routing your water pipes and such to drain into you a garden or something like that...

I encourage you to look at all kinds of different eco-friendly websites, and such...

I find  treehugger.com to be helpful with those types of things..

    hope this helped!

  6. Install rainwater tanks.

Water the garden with a bucket filled with shower water.

An intersting one... Stand out side in the rain and have a shower. lol

  7. Learn about how to save and store water. Study small hydro electric power plants. Work with your community to use wate water from the sewage treatment plant to water lawns. Check out wetlands on CoolingEarth.org

  8. my faucet has been dripping for 4 years.
