Question:

What are we doing to help women and children in our own communities?

I have a serious question and would like only serious, thoughtful answers.

There is a lot being said about women on here, but who among us is actually working in her own community to better the lives of women and children? I'd appreciate specific examples of what you do or ideas about how we can start to improve the lives of women and children in our communities.

Too often we are filled with idealism and are ready to defend certain positions...but what are we really DOING to make a difference?

  1. Helping women and children sometimes is better achieved when dedicated men are involved. These men can drive point thro' others who cannot see straight. So, get men involved.

Also educate teenagers. Those who grew up seeing abuse, or were abused, think that is the 'way of life and behavior', need to be re-educated what is right. This includes both boys and girls.

Education should be emphasized and re-emphasized. This helps a lot to restart life when difficulties arise. This is where the girls get more trapped than boys - teen age pregnancies, babycare  etc. - and can never return to self-sufficiency stage.

The teenage culture is changing. They need to have the education first, their finances in order and then have babies. If you can get this point across a few growing gals and guys, and hope they will spread the concept around, it would be great.

Helping the needy is nice and essential, but an attempt to erradicate the problem will be excellent.

  2. Nothing. It is NOT my responsabilty.

  3. Pretty much creating a social culture where they do not get into this situation in the first place.  Also, teach them to be self sufficient.

It is amazing that there is a subculture of "welfare moms" that just sleep with any guy that comes around, gets pregnant and lives off welfare.  I keep on wondering how many of these girls did this if welfare and WIC was discontinued.  Now that would handle government spending!

  4. yeah, this isn't really the best place to ask a good question and honestly expect coherent and logical answers.

to answer your question, I work in this community for disadvantaged/ poor kids and teens and I generally help out and tutor children. the community has a program that helps teens develop empowerment and helps them deal with their own sexuality. I've met girls who were rape victims or abused; the least I could do was be a decent friend and listener to them.

I teach Sunday school at this parish in a bad neighborhood.

kids are our future. If people like volunteers and teachers help them, who will? after all, they're seen as a burden to our society for some. :(

  5. Why are women and children the ONLY ones that need help? There's plenty of men out there that need help too, I'm so sick of this bias women are ALMOST equal to men now except what they get like 10 cents more than us? Who GIVES a **** there's soooooo many more important things to worry about in this world than the teeny bit of unequality between men and women. Let's put our energy into something IMPORTANT.

  6. I work for a non-profit angency that goes into inner-city schools and promotes literacy in 2nd and 3rd grade. We also work in a womens shelter, giving the women and their children classes. These classes go over educational activities they can do with their own children to increase their future success.

I think the communities are not doing enough for women and thats why non-profits like mine have to go in and try to help where we can.

We need to start stopping all these teen births. Very few of the mothers stay in school, very few work, they live off the welfare system and keep having more kids. (the only reason I am saying this the way I am is because I was a teen mother, i saw what the other girls my age were doing, when i was the only one working and going to school 60 hours a week).

  7. I have been out there and worked on PFAs and the like. The question though I think is biased. Why should help be restricted to women and children? Why shouldnt men be helped too?

  8. I am active in the Boy Scouts when I can. Showing boys without an active(i.e. one weekend a month) father what is expected of a boy is the best I can do. Teaching boys how to honor and respect women is a great goal. Bewildering to me , it is the radical feminist that attacks the Boy Scouts.

  9. I once did or currently participate in:

    Boards member, 2 community agencies.

Volunteer at a women's clinic, worked primarily with the very young 11-15 teens.

Political appointee to a state womens commission, we did legislative oversight, developed a womens legal resource handbook, and policy development.

Second political appointment to state bar committee that drafted pro se rules and documents to use in dissolution cases (benefits both genders).

Started a program to assist children of inmates (male and female).

Educate others as to issues, including health (benefits both genders).

    and much more.

  10. I donate all my old clothes and shoes to women's shelters, and all my daughter's outgrown baby clothes, plus any bottles or baby equipment she has outgrown. Also, paperback books and magazines. I wish I had time to donate, but I work full-time.

  11. I have my ideals and feminist is one but I do more then just that.  I am an introvert so I tend to not go out much.  However; I am a huge contributor to abused women and children as well as disabled vets of all genders.

Here's a good one what are you doing?  You stand so high and mighty what for?

  12. My family is active in Boy Scouts.  I have been a cub scout leader, and my husband is a current boy scout leader.  I am also active in both my kids' schools, as a classroom volunteer, and PTA board member.  We also give to our church, which in turn, gives to the community.  Why did you leave out men?  Aren't there also men in need?

  13. I volunteer regularly at soup kitchens, along with my children.  I also feed the men that come through the line, though.

I also work with a literacy program that teaches PEOPLE to read.

  14. I'm a board member for an organization that helps women recover from abusive homes. It includes giving financial education, emotional assistance and help returning to school or work.

To all the people who are going to ask "what about men" I have also volunteered with organizations that help homeless people and disabled children. I have nothing against men but the women's centre is a great organization and there are a lot of women that need their services.
