My dad gets up 4 in the morning and comes home 10:30 at night. He works two jobs, one is not his and the other is our own business. The business there is bad and we don't have money to pay for food, we do but there is so little.

My dad is at a breaking point where he is so tired and works all day and he doesn't know what to do.

  1. How old are you?  From your question you sound fairly mature, not like a young kid.  Can you get a job and help out?

    Good luck.

  2. PLEASE don't follow up the qet-rich-quick suggestions, they never work.

What does the store do. Could it sell something else?

Take a cold hard look at it. Would your dad be better off just keeping the store closed and working somewhere else until he could sell it.  If he takes less money in the store than he could earn somewhere else it might be worth it. Perhaps he could then rent the store out to someone else?

Perhaps he might be better off not doing the other job and concentrating on the store more.

Get together as a family and talk through all the options - good luck. Hang in there.

  3. If business is bad, and Dad doesn't know how to make it better, it would be better for him to find a good, well-paying job and then close his business. Many businesses fail, and there is no shame in closing one. I know his pride must be involved, but family obligations come first. He might have to file bankrupcy, but he needs legal help.

  4. Go to http://www.score.org/ and in the upper left hand corner, enter your zip code.  On the next screen, you will get information on the nearest SCORE chapter.  Call them and arrange for a free meeting with a SCORE counselor.

SCORE is a nonprofit association dedicated to entrepreneur education and the formation, growth and success of small business nationwide. SCORE is a resource partner with the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA).

SCORE has 389 chapters in locations throughout the United States and its territories, with 10,500 volunteers nationwide. Both working and retired executives and business owners donate time and expertise as business counselors.
