  1. Woods have larger, heavier heads and hit the ball furthest. In general they are used off tees (especially the driver, which is the same as a 1-wood), or off fairways (short grass). Most golfers use a driver and maybe one or two others from 3-wood to 7-wood (low numbers hit the ball further) - odd numbers are more common, though some players prefer to use a 4-wood instead of a 3 and a 5, because there is a limit of 14 clubs in a bag.

Irons may also be used off a tee on a short hole, but in general they are used from fairway or rough (long grass) to get to the green. They allow more accurate judgement of both line and distance. Most golfers play all the numbers from 3-iron to 9-iron (again lower hits further), though these days many players have dropped 3 and even 4-iron in favour of "hybrids" or "rescue clubs", which are kind of a blend between irons and woods. A few die-hards still use 2-irons, but 1-irons are now extremely rare as they are a very difficult club to use. Lee Trevino once held one above his head in a thunderstorm, saying "Even God can't hit a 1-iron".

Wedges are even more precise, and are used when very close to the green (under 100 yards). The pitching wedge is often considered virtually part of the set of irons; the sand wedge is, as its name implies, mainly used from bunkers (though it can be used anywhere), and has a specially shaped base to stop it digging into the sand; the gap wedge lies somewhere between the pitching wedge and sand wedge, and the lob wedge is the most lofted of all, and is used for very high shots that stop quickly. Most golfers have at least a pitching wedge and sand wedge, some carry four wedges.

Then once on the green you use the putter of course.

  2. Is this a trick question? Woods and irons are used to hit golf balls from one location to the next location on a golf course...

  3. Woods/Drivers are used at the beginning at the white or blue tees.

Irons = 3-5 are used in the fair way, to get to the green

Irons = 6-9 are used to chip onto the green

Sand wedge = to get out of the sand traps

Chipping wedge = to chip onto the green

Hope this helps. Distance of each club depends on the person. People hit each club different lengths/distances

  4. The higher the number on the club the shorter it goes.

  5. In case of the woods, each wood looks like a bread jointing a long length staff, as well as uses for shooting golf ball to a long distance target, and is usable on both fairway (approaching a golf ball to green for Par 4 or 5) and tee-off (for Par 3). Another case of the irons, each iron looks like a big spoon jointing a short, or middle, or long length staff, as well as is different degree of lob, and uses for on both fairway (approaching a golf ball to green for Par 4 or 5) and tee-off (for Par 3), as well. The golf-ball distance of each of golfer's shooting is individual, so each golfer would have to look for it himself.

  6. Clubs are used 4 hitting the golf ball. The aim is to get the ball in the hole in the least amount of shots. The lowest score at the end of the game wins.
