What are woods used for?

teeing off, that i know.But can it be used to hit shots off the ground?if so, is it 3/5 or both can be used

Woods are for fairway lies or tees. You can also hit a wood when the ball is resting up in the turf but distance and club head speed will suffer. 3 wood or 5 will do fine, but it takes years to groove the swing. Start now, and by the end of summer you will be pounding these clubs on par 5's at the green. PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE. Don't try to use these clubs in the rough. You will be very frustrated. And lose balls 50 yards short. Did you watch the Desert Classic in Dubai????? Even Tiger cant hit a wood out of the rough. Neither can Ernie Els. And if they cant do it, i recommend you don't even try. Keep these clubs for the fairway lies. You will be much happier.

I remember a 7-wood called a "ginty" that was designed to be used in poor lies or in semi-rough... a little deeper than the fringe that lies the fairway. I think they call it the first cut nowadays?

If you don't know that then you should not be trying to play golf.  There are only a handful of people in the world who can really play the game.  You don't even know the basics.

Woods are typically your distance clubs. The closer you get to the green, the higher number wood you use. However, you can chip and putt with them if you like.

Waz, you must be a beginning golfer because you have asked a lot of questions. How old are you? Do you live where you can practice frequently? Will you be trying out for the school team?

There's no rule that says you have to hit a certain shot with a certain club.  You can use the 3 and 5 woods off the fairway, to punch out of the rough....Tiger Woods even uses the 3 wood to chip.
