I have been told that you shouldn`t put them in ordinary waste as they contain harmfull substances, it would be nice for abit of advice on the packaging when it comes to dispose of them.

  1. i don't know, but it's the same with batteries,if you've bought any electric appliances lately have you notice there is more about getting rid of it than how to use it.  codger

  2. They do contain mercury.  Handle with care and try not to let them break!

Call your local landfill for advice on where to recycle them.  My landfill for example does accept them.  They have a special bin just for this.

  3. you can get a special double cardboard box with a sealed lining just for disposing that type of lights

  4. From Home Depot:

"CFL lamps (light bulbs) contain a small amount of mercury necessary for normal operation. The mercury contained in a CFL bulb is less then 4 mg, which is less then the cell batteries used in watches, hearing aids, some toys, calculators, thermometers and in dental fillings; however, the lamps should be handled responsibly and recycled to reduce the mercury from passing into the environment. Information about cleanup and recycling by state can be found at the following EPA website: Visit http://www.epa.gov"

The site you need is actually: http://www.epa.gov/epaoswer/hazwaste/id/...

Thanks for being so responsible! I didn't even know about the mercury problem with these lightbulbs until reading your question!

EDIT: HEY! Just found out - if you live anywhere near an Ikea, apparently they will take them back from you. :)

  5. send them to the maker is posible or ask local council

  6. The people who told you that, Slappy, are right.  The bulbs contain mercury, which can leak out if the bulb is broken in the trash.  Your best bet is to check online to see if there are places that recycle them near you.  Of course, if you drive there simply to recycle one bulb, that isn't very green, now is it, Slappy?  Make sure you can walk or take public transport before you go recycle your one bulb.  Or save up a bunch of them before you drive.
