In comparative terms they badly under performed. With their resources they should dominate the Olympics but they don't achieve their full potential.

Being 1st place in the Medal list, what else would you want more?

They did underperform. I think the US underestimated other countries' athletes potential.

By the way, if you really want to think the US is first because of total medal count, you can have all your bronze medals next time, other countries' will take the gold and silver. Then we'll see a ranking in the US ranked by bronze medal count.

i think they went great, especially with Micheal Phelps ..he was awesome

VERY Good, considering our athletes come through a free system and aren't punched out by a monolithic machine that compells people to perform and puts their medal achievement above the individual's well being.

China outdid us. No matter the overall count, China had the best.

USA is no 2.  Based on the IOC rule, gold medal count is used to determined the countries standings in the Olympics and lesser medal are only used as tie breakers.

Anywhere in the world China is listed as no 1, except in USA's media, which lists USA as no 1 based on total medal count.  Ironically, in the past, the US was using gold medal count instead of total medal.

And to consider total count tally is just simply FLAWED logic, as that would mean bronze medal is equally as important as gold.

Bad side: One of the worst Track and Field performances. Jamaicans crushing the sprinters. Men and women relay teams botch batons. How in the world is that possible?

Good side: Improvement in medal count from 2004. Michael Phelps and Lochte=Amazing.
