  1. "In a hole in the ground there lived a Hobbit..."

    The first paragraph of the Hobbit.  "Not a dry sandy hole, nor a damp hole filled with the ends of worms."

    I first read that paragraph when my older brother Alex gave me a copy of the book when I was seven.  It's still one of the best fantasy books ever written.
