What are your favorite play dough props/accessories?

My children have been invited to 2 birthday parties this weekend - each for twin boys turning 2. I'm making some homemade play dough for them and would like to give them some accessories for the play dough. My kids like popsicle sticks and small animals to stick in the dough, so I'm definately including those items. I'm just looking for a few other things that 2-year-olds can use independently. Does anyone have suggestions?

  1. I like those plastic cookie cutters. They come in many different shapes and you can usually find them in the 99 cent store.

  2. I went to the dollar store and stocked up on a bunch of plastic cookie cutters. You could also get some kids kitchen acceseries, like the knives (fake kid ones) and the pizza cutter. All plastic so they're safe.

  3. my mom always gave us cookie cutters and we loved making the shapes.

Also little figurines (like cars, army men, etc)

  4. My mother owns a preschool. So she is always making playdoh. The kids really seem to love rolling pins. You can buy little kid sized ones. I know these have already been said but they do work great, plastic scissors and cookie cutters. But what they love most are some baking utensils. Like muffin pans, bowls, plastic knives (with no serated edge). They are always pretending to make cupcakes, cookies, and cakes(: Also, if you have any Mr. Potato head pieces lying around (some of the bigger ones - eyes, shoes, mouths) they love to make people out of the dough.

And I must say, that is a really cute idea. I don't know what your doing to the play-dough already but I just wanted to tell you what I sometimes but in it: Glitter (kids love it) and Food Extracts. You can put a little in the dough to make it smell really good. (my favorite is banana extract).

  5. My two older kids (3 and 2) like those plastic scissors.  They don't have a blade on them at all and are impossible to cut yourself with.  Pinch, maybe, but not cuts.  They like rolling the play-dough and using those scissors to cut it up.  I also sometimes give them plastic knives to use.  You'd have to clear that with the mother first though.  Those should only be used under adult supervision.

They also like the giant medicine syringes (without the needle of course.  just the oral syringes).  They put play-dough in the tube, then use the plunger to squeeze it out the end.  You have to buy the really big ones though or its super hard to squeeze it out that teeny tiny hole.

  6. Cookie cutters!  Maybe find out what their favorite animals are and get them those, and maybe stick in a cookie cutter of the first letter of their first names.  Very cute idea by the way!

  7. Something with holes to squeeze it through to make wormy things. Wire mesh or plastic sieve. (They might be a little young for the wire.)

I used to use my parents fireplace screen.  :)
