  1. Hm--a toughie.  I will go with:

My Best Games of Chess 1935-1957 by Vassily Smyslov (my favorite player)

Learn From the Grandmasters (ed by Raymond Keene [unfortunately])

My Games by Garry Kasparov (actually not sure if that was the exact title, but it was a big blue book and came out early on--nothing but his games--and I did own it at one time)

  2. Hello,

See 'BOOK' under the letter 'B' on my web page below?  I hope this is helpful for you.  I've read many - but these days the web chess sites are excellent resources for almost anything to do with chess.  As a bonus you save a lot of money by browsing chess web pages.

    Yours,

    Chesmayne.

  3. Play Winning chess Tactics, strategy, and Endings by Yassar Serwian

Actually the entire series is brilliant, but since you only asked for 3 =)

What makes these books so wonderful for the beginner - intermediate player is that it is written in a way so that they will understand it.  We are not grandmaster, telling us grandmaster tactics doesn't really help us that much.  He takes it step by step, walking though the process of learning.  Something that most chess book neglect to do.
