  1. I think these examples are self explanitory: having known after the roofing is complete that the roofer did a poor job, using faulty and sub-standard material  and , having termites invade the roofing,Not installing the shingles correctly, or a roofer giving you a quote for material used and you find out he used, "used" material instead of new material.

  2. Can't write in detail because the way you phrased this, sounds like you want someone to do your homework.

Here are some "enemies", however --- Sun, Wind, Rain, Pitch of the Roof (flat roofs are notorious for leaking - steeply pitched roofs can last years longer.) and of course, age.

  3. According to Factory Mutual LPDS 1-28 and 1-29 the number one "enemy" or cause of premature failure is wind uplift. Followed by installation error. Rarely are materials themselves faulty, and I disagree that flat roofs are notorious for leaking... I find that flat roofs, especially singleply roofs are able to meet and exceed greater wind uplift requirements than virtually and pitched roof, and when installed properly they have fewer seams then pitched roofs where water may enter the system.

Other enemies would include hail, fire, foot traffic, low spots that pond water, UV degradation and lack of maintenance.

Worth including would be poor design... Architects do some stupid things...
