I have had the mirina IUD in for a year now but have realized i am not as informed as i should have been. It seems like the perfect birth control....i am 20 years old with one child and do not want to have another for a while....so it lasts up to five years and no daily pill taking or putting anything in....yet nothing is ever this perfect...does anyone know the bad possiblities of this method like side effects (fertility problems afterward....hormonal problems ect...) and how does it even work...like i said---i should have done way more information before i got it put in but all i thought was "5 years....no hassle...yay!"

  1. i hate myself for getting the Marina..i bleed irregular bleeding  so bad ..i am always wear a pad..when i am on my period i have to do a fast shower because if i donot i poor blood everwhere.and they said it was fine..i just keeping it in so i do not have to take pills or get a shot..so if anyone ask me if they should get one i tell me my story of how bad it for me...

  2. I am on my second Mirena and love it.  I convinced my doctor to let me try one before I had a baby and I had no problems other than occasional cramping.  My periods stopped after a few months with only occasional spotting.  I stopped having migraines that I had with birth control pills which was wonderful.

I had it taken out when we were ready to have a baby and about 10 weeks later I was pregnant.  At my 6 week post partum checkup I had another MIrena inserted.  It doesn't interfere with breastfeeding so that was even better!

The problems happen mostly when you have a history of, or contract any STD's or Pelvic Inflamatory Disease -  Berlex labs / Mirena don't recommend the IUD for anyone with or at risk of that medical history because of possible scar tissue. So being in a monogomous relationship is really important.  It is a low dose hormone directly infused into your uterus (as opposed to taking a pill or shot that has to be processed in your stomach or muscles before entering the blood stream to finally effect your uterus.)

The mirena website is very informative.  It helped me make the decision to get one the first time.  I know more women that love their mirena than those who don't.  It isn't for everyone, but it sounds like it is working well for you!

    Taken From www.mirena-us.com/howmirenaworks.html

"While there is no single explanation for how Mirena® works, it may:

    1. Block sperm from reaching or fertilizing your egg

    2. Make the lining of your uterus thin (this may also result in benefits like less menstrual bleeding over time)

    3. Stop the release of your egg from your ovary (but this is not the way it works in most cases)

It is believed that all 3 of these actions may work together to prevent pregnancy.

It is thought that the small amounts of levonorgestrel that are released by Mirena® make your cervical mucus thick and tacky. This is why sperms are immobilized and can't enter the uterus. And the thinning of the uterus is why you may have less menstrual bleeding over time. In fact, about 20% of women will have no period after one year, a safe (and, for most women, preferred) condition."

  3. to be honest i think you made a pretty good choice....one that i will be making around jan/feb:-)   I have worked for doctors, done clinicals and 2 family members have Mirena...... The ONLY draw backs i see are...possible irregular bleeding or lack of, and the very small chance that if you did concieve the pregnancy may implant in the tubes instead of the uterus. I have never myself heard of anyone having fertility problems, i think you are good to go but you may just want to speak with your doctor concernong your ?'s. GOD BLESS!!!!!!1
