  1. I think they serve a good purpose, provided they are kept in check and not go over the top with the infantile (and occasionally injurious and even deadly) "hazing" garbage that they (fraternities in particular, I hate to say) cannot seem to get away from.

  2. As a member of a sorority, I can tell you that at almost any given university or college, the all Greek women GPA for any semester or year will be higher than the non Greek women average; Greek women are statistically more likely to graduate within 4 years too.

I think that sororities/fraternities are not for everyone and I've visited some campuses where I would NEVER have joined any of the chapters there if I were a student.  You will need to explore your new school's greek system and make that decision yourself based on research you do.

I've been thrilled with my decision to join a sorority.  It cost me less to live in our beautiful sorority house with our own chef than it would have to continue living in university housing eating the dorm food.  I've had access to scholarships strictly for my sorority's members and I've also found it to be a great safety net and resource for me while an undergrad.

And truthfully, joining a sorority will have its stressful moments but no more than it would if you joined any other all female organization like a sports team.

Oh, and as a last jab to everyone who tries to perpetuate the dumb sorority girl myth:  my sorority chapter has had a Fulbright scholar every year since sometime in the 80s.   Condaleeza Rice is a member of one of the largest non historically black sororities....just as an example.

  3. I am learning english.  I have no idea what  sororities/fraternities are.  So I have no thoughts/feelings on it.

  4. I think they're a good idea when used properly.

They are SUPPOSED to be for introducing students to other students, and forming close, trustworthy bonds during the critical college years, but now its just about hooking up and partying, which is why we have such a high drop out rate in college.

  5. I've met very few respectable men who were part of a fraternity, but I've met plenty of respectable women who were part of sororities.  This may have just been specific to my university, but it seemed as though sororities are more likely to try to do charity work and stuff, while fraternities are more likely just to drink and act like 3 year olds.

  6. They're a false sense of belonging.

Another words, sororities are nothing more than belonging for the purpose of "being cool" by being part of some brother or sister hood on a college level.

Sororities/Fraternities are a college fab like the stereotypical high school group labels.

Oh yeah, and those Brother and Sister hoods are just legit excuses for people to play favorites in college and, in the real world after they graduate, if they don't drop out due to alcoholism.............

  7. i think they are a great way to create segregation and enforce the 'pecking order'

They establish a false sense of belonging yes but they also take away from the academic side on university.....

they focus on trivials, material aspects, partying, friends, 'groups' and clans, bullshit carry on which excepts people on certain discrimatory criteria.....

university should be about establishing connections while gaining knowledge experience and expertise, not exploitation and bias majority groupies

  8. Although belonging to Yale University's Skull and Bones supposedly will give someone entre in the hallowed halls of power and privilege, I have never been impressed nor intrigued with sororities and/or fraternities, nor would I stomach any indignity just to be a member.  I have always had too much of an identity for that c**p.
