Joe Louis was the #1/#2 Heavyweight Champ of all time, depending on who you ask, but what he did for the U.S. during WWII was downright Heroic, and after all that He got shafted! It has ticked me off for a long time. Anyone else?

  1. Most definetly as Joe is one of the all time greats!  He is an American icon and a hero to millions.  He was a good man and was charitable to the war effort. Obviously his money was mishandled and he was done wrong.  It is a very sad story how he was forced to fight again after being retired then in later years working in Vegas as a greeter.  Yes what the government done to him is a shame and a disgrace and you would think they could have cut him at least a little slack.  He did indeed get shafted.

  2. Agree with toughguy and voneric.  Louis raised money for our defense in WW2--- it's documented.  He was then forced to end his retirement because he couldn't pay his taxes.  You would have thought that someone in our government could have come up with an idea where they could have used Louis for something beneficial.  I find it very ironic that Max Schmeling paid for Louis's funeral and in the last years of Louis's life Schmeling paid his bills.

  3. yea he got shafted, especially after his fight for charity or the war effort which raised alot of money.  One of the best heavyweights ever.

  4. Yes it was disgusting! He is an American Hero! His title defense against Schmelling was used by both sides of the war as a propaganda tool. After that he raised a lot of money and at one time was the spokesman for the Army.

  5. What else do you expect from the US government ....is kinda of ironic that Muhammed Ali is setup as the Great US Sport figure that he is when most Americans (non blacks) hated him throughtout his career and was even Against the US government and blasted them Publicly .... But Joe Louis who did everything the government asked him to do was basically treated like a third class citizen when he was no longer usefull to them... Sad story but i think it was the times they lived in as well....durning the Times of Joe Louis there was probably mixed feelings that they would Joe like a Hero in the Ring but make him drink from a colored fountain if he was thristy out of it... Joe fault was he trusted that Government and as you said got shafted but what would you have wanted the government to do .... Joe seemed like a very proud man and maybe he just wanted to work for his money than take charity from a Government that forgot him... Joe Louis is an American Hero and even though he may have died poor or felt mistreated , he has become an Iconic figure and his Name has become immortal ....he will forever be remembered like the Babe or Sugar Ray Robinson and thats an honor some like more than money

  6. if you mean that he fought twice for the government & they still taxed him on it, then yes, it was absolutely sicking and discusting.
