  1. There is no doubt in my mind that by the end of the year Sharapova would have overtaken Henin as the number one player.  Henin was headed for a terrible year compared to last year, and Sharapova started off so strong and has only continued to add points from the beginning.

As far as seeding for the French Open, Sharapova looks to be the likely top seed, but that certainly doesn't make her top dog.  She will have to fight for every win on clay.  But she has had her best start to a year in her career, so maybe this is just a sign of good luck and a sign of bigger and better things later this year?  Even though it's a stretch, winning the French Open isn't impossible and Sharapova just might be the one to shock us all.

If you want to know if she is the number one player on clay, then no, only becase she's not the best clay court player and so many other Eropean's are great on clay.  But her performance on other surfaces has given her the top spot and so yes she does deserve the top honors.

  2. Many people seem to forget that she made it to the Semi-finals of Roland Garros last year.  I think she will make the final, will she win it is another story.

  3. She's a VERY talented player, she deserves it as hard as she's worked!

  4. I'm okay with her being number one in the world because she's worked hard to get herself up to number 2 and she would deserve it. But as far as being seeded number 1 at the French Open, I personally don't think she should be, though I could see her being in the top five because she did well there last year. But we can't forget about players like Serena, Ivanovic. Also Kuznetsova went to the finals last year, and had match point against Henin, so I think she'll do pretty well this year at the French. Clay has never been one of Maria's best surface's and I know she won a clay tournament, but that was that icky green clay, not the red clay at Roland Garros. I think Ivanovic will probably be the number one seed. We'll see what happens is a couple of weeks.

  5. The French Open is seeded according to the rankings, so she deserves it.  She was a semifinalist last year at Roland Garros, she's already won a clay title this year, and she is now the top-ranked active player, so she should be the #1 seed.

  6. She said being #1 is not a big deal to her, why should we care?

  7. its going to happen for sure

  8. well, she'll be number one. i don't think she being one or two is going to make much difference on her presence at RG. for one thing, maria is not justine nor is she even a svetlana or serena who,in spite of not being the greatest herself, plays better than she does. she just doesn't have the clay skills that will make the rank matter. i'm not being mean just being realistic. frankly,i think any of the other top 5 girls have a better chance to win.

  9. that's going to be the pic when the WTA will finally stamp JH out of the ranking. Winning of course is a different story. Clay is not Maria's best surface but she performed well at Amelia and even at last year's RG. So she is going to be a threat for the rest of the seeds. But being #1 is not something new to Maria for she held this rank before. She even said its no big deal for her, winning is. it's just sad not to see JH at the RG. As to the reason, i think the tennis world needs a better and acceptable reason for that.

  10. if she was the number two player in the world before henin retired then she is the number one now. she deserves it.

  11. Perfect. Beauty, grace, skills & talents all in Maria. I enjoy every game she plays even if she loses. Watching her body & legs in motion is very entertaining enough. I hope she win every grandslams to complete her record run. She makes tennis more fun & so lovely to watch.

    Good times
