On the new umpire review system which will be trialled in Sri Lanka-India Tests?- Main article- http://content-uk.cricinfo.com/ci-icc/content/current/story/354984.html

The Main points of the system are:

Umpires should still be permitted to refer line decisions or boundaries to the third umpire as normal without a player requesting him to refer that decision"

The players should be permitted to ask the on-field umpire to review any aspect of any other decision in consultation with the third umpire

The process should take the form and order of: on-field umpire gives his decision; affected batsman or fielding side's captain asks the umpire to review that decision; the on-field umpire(s) and third umpire consult; the on-field umpire gives his final decision

The committee recommended that Hawk-Eye technology could be used by the third umpire but only for the purposes of determining the actual path of the ball up until the point that it struck the batsman and not the predictor

  1. It's about time all umpiring decisions were made by technology. It's quick, it's easy, and there can be no disputes.

This process sounds like a load of hogwash, and the players will not have any respect for the umpires. It could potentially turn into a farce.

  2. I see 2 issues here and this is how I see it

    1) The umpire: human v/s technology: I suggest that as long as technology is reliable it should replace the human to the best extent and the argument is simply that a machine/technology  is consistent whereas a human is not

    2) Is the umpire's verdict absolute?; I think whether the umpire is  human or technology or a blend of both, their verdict should be final. In other words there should not be room for review.

I apologize for the wordy response.

  3. These guys have a very difficult job lets help them BUT only if they are consulted and agree. Have they been consulted?

  4. Yer i partially think it will be successfull, because it won't put the umpires at fault.

I do however think that there should be a maximum amount of times that a player can call for the umpire to review his decision. Other wise i think in some matches we may see a lot of decisions going to the third umpire and being cosulted that it may become time consuming.

A question that comes to mind is that this type of technology wasn't always available for us to use. But we didn't seem to have problems, all of a sudden the umpires' decision is being questioned, do we really need all of this?

I partially agree with this new system. I just think it's not that necessary.

  5. the first answer was spot on. Technology should be used

  6. When they have gone so far, they could as well include the part of using the predictor for LBWs and not just till the point of impact. This would make their jobs easier as in case of wildly swinging balls or turning ones, where the point of impact could be misleading.

  7. I can see Ange's point, that it would stop all the chants of cheater etc, but I also see Marco's point, I too prefer the umpires decision as in the past, & frankly will it stop the whingers? They'll just say the mechanism was tampered with! You have seen people here over the last 6 months lying to themselves as well as us concerning very obvious outs/not outs. But as with everything, I suppose we have to move on. Bring it on & prove me wrong, I say!

  8. i think it is a very good move and will welcome by all cricket lovers.

  9. I love it - I love it - I love it.

I would like to see a limit - Like 3 wrong requests per innings - That way if you keep contesting the umpire's call you end up looking like a goose if YOU are the one who keeps getting it wrong.

I like the Tennis system - It's as close to perfect as you can get in modern times.

Hawk eye should be used with a margin of error - In other words if the ball is clipping the wickets or the bails within the margin of error then the batsman must be given not out for lbw decisions - I hope that makes sense.

  10. I strongly feel that it will be a welcome move, which will help to reduce controversies due to wrong decisions from the umpires.

  11. Yes i think it is a great idea..Now hopefully it may stop a few 'whingers' who constantly chant- "cheaters"...

The one i do have a problem with is the players being able to ask the question to the umpires..

I think it 'may' end up causing trouble, maily players loosing respect for the umpires...

I have always agreed with the Hawkeye technology and hopefully bringing in these new rules will make things a little fairer and earier...

  12. well it may be a bit out dated now, but i still believe the umpire makes a decision, and weather its good or bad, you accept it, mind you i have to believe that as well! if youd seen the standard of umpiring that goes on in the league i play in, youd know why!! LOL
