I would advise taking only a carry-on bag, that way you can avoid any additional bag fees. Either way you'll want to make sure you have all of the following in your carry-on:

- all electronics you want to use during the flight and their plugs

- a small bag of personal hygiene items (toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, etc...keep in mind the 3.4oz / 1 quart bag limits)

- a change of clothing/ extra underwear

- some snacks (non liquid) in case there is nothing offered on the flight

- whatever form of money you're going to need

- identification

As far as gadgets, you definitely want a pair of noise cancelling headphones, unpleasant sounds can ruin an otherwise pleasant flight. Its also nice to have a power adapter kit, to limit the number of chargers you have to bring. Portable DVD players, PSP's and video iPods are all a good way to pass the time when you're waiting on your flight or in the air.

I would carry-on any valuables that you can't replace easily. Phone, Ipod,chargers,camera, jewelry and medications etc.

I always pack a change of clothes in case my luggage is delayed or lost.
