What area in Greenwich NYC isn't the best area to live in?

I'm going to NYU hopefully, and I'm looking at apartments in the Greenwich area, and they're posted with upper east side etc which areas aren't very good to live in? (I know nothing about NYC...I live in Canada)

first of all the upper east side is pretty far from the village... u wanna look for something in the east village, west village, or chelsea
