What area in TORONTO is great for raising a family and not too expensive and def not low income. middle class.

I lived in winnipeg and am now in houston, me and my fiance and our baby girl are planning on moving to toronto in a year and a half but don't know the area..and its big so i'd really appreciate the information. Thank You.

My fiance and I just bought a house right outside of Toronto 2 days ago!

The thing with TO is that people rarely live and raise a family right IN the city. Housing is just too crazy expensive and public transit for getting into the city is great.

So instead I would look into places like Port Credit, Mississauga, Brampton, Scarborough, Oakville (thats where I bought)

These places are right next to the city yet are still considered the GTA (Greater Toronto Area)

They also have schools close by and are usually great communities for raising children.

I would start with Port Credit (which is the closest) and see how far your $$ takes you for the amount of home you you get.

The further from downtown you get, the cheaper the housing will be. For instance, we looked at 2-bedroom townhouses right down town that were almost 700,000!!

I am also originally from Winnipeg (Fort Garry), and I also am considering moving to Toronto. Right now I am in another province due to my husband's job, but hopefully we can make the big move one day!

If you want to live right in the city, I suggest the Beaches area. It's nice, eclectic (a little bit like a cross between Winnipeg's Osbourne Village and Corydon with a splash of River Heights), and reasonably priced for Toronto standards. Note that Toronto is generally an expensive place to live.

The Beaches has many well kept older homes and a beautiful beach walkway along the water (hence the name). It's a great place to raise a family, in my opinion.

i worked in toronto for 31/2 years. we lived in east york a largely ethnic greek section of toronto. at the time we paid

$1100 a month to rent of a small bungalo on o'conner dr.

right off the don valley pkwy. download google earth onto your computer and you will be able to get a satellite image any location on earth. love the mass transit, health care diverse ethnicity, family activities and many many other

aspects of living in canada. the only drawback was that it was expensive. move there you would love it. good luck to you. p.s. i don't recall ever seeing any bad neighborhoods in toronto.

Well, Toronto really is a great place for you and your family!  Welcome!!

I would recommend Brampton, Ajax, Oshawa, as these cities are lovely to love in, with family-based population, but the house prices are also cheaper than certain parts of Toronto.  

If you tried to purchase a home in Toronto, you would be looking at at least $800K, even for tiny homes, but if you look at homes in the above areas, you will get a decent sized home, (more than 2000 sq ft) for like $300K.

Yes, living in T.O is pricey but it's well worth it.

The other poster mentioned Oakville, Mississauga & Brampton--they are quite a distance from the downtown core.  Also, our highways here are very congested so if you have to commute into the city every morning, it's terrible.  The morning drive from Oakville has got to be at least on hour long.  Not worth it, imho.

I'm not TOO sure about which areas are the cheapest, but I know if you go further up north (where it's the countryside area) or closer to downtown, houses/condos are much more pricey there. Since you and your fiance have a baby, it's probably best to look for an area with long-term uses for your daughter. Like an area close to an elementary school, park, daycare, etc. Generally, Malern and also Jane & Finch area are known to be dangerous and not very family oriented. There's a lot of crimes near those areas, so I don't think you would feel too safe there. My husband and I live close to McCowan and 401 which we are really comfortable with. It's a condominium complex and it's very convenient. There is a school, grocery store, mall, YMCA, library, subway station and park nearby. I don't know what else to tell you, I don't know about all the Toronto areas, I am just telling you about the areas I've had experience with.

Within Toronto is very expensive and crowded. The suburbs are nicer for raising a family, it looks nicer and there is less pollution, it is more spaceous and homes are almost half the price for the same area. Cornell is a nice village type community on the east end of Markham, it is very new and looks like a historical town, however it is far from a lot of places in Toronto. If you like the idea of being by the lake, Port Credit just outside the west end in Mississauga is gorgeous and Port Union on the east end of Scarborough is nice too.

Mississauga, Pickering for outside of the city.

Greektown, Bloor West Village, Little Italy for in the city.

You'll probably have to do some hunting as Toronto's getting expensive.  You could end up paying a lot more than your neighbours, wherever you are.
