Hostel world lists Borgoricco, Chioggia, Dolo, Lido, Mestro, Mira. I don't want to need to travel far to see attractions etc. How far apart are these areas, and where would you suggest staying?

  1. I stayed in a really cool and very cheap B&B next to the Academy.  I think it even has the name associated with Academy, but I can't remember exactly.  It's very close to the major sites and it's in a really cool neighborhood.

  2. there is also a hostel in venice! try this link:

you'll find budget accommodation. i would suggest staying in the Venice city center or in Mestre (this is the correct spelling) for your first time to Venice, or you'll waste time.

  3. Venice is not that large.  If you find a good affordable place, you can always take the "bus" which is actually a boat anywhere.  The buses or vaparettos are much cheaper than the water taxis and are very efficient.  I've heard that the gondolas really rip you off.   After taking the vaparetto, we didn't really feel the need to go on a gondola ride.  The vaparetto ride around the city is worth taking even if you don't have a specific destination.  We walked around everywhere and took the bus to Murano.  Evidently, the least expensive places to stay are actually on the mainland but then you would have to take a bus in everyday.  We drove, parked in the Piazzale Roma ($$), and took a water taxi into Venice.  There were long lines to get into Venice on the water bus.  We didn't want to wait and had a lot of luggage.

  4. I'd try to stay in Venice proper - check out www.trav.com for some cheap digs

  5. I suggest Chioggia or Burano, near Venice.

    Venice is more expensive!
