Most of Sydney is pretty much safe. If you care about safety, avoid south-western Sydney. I live in this area and it's not the best place to be in.

It's all mostly safe, and it's difficult and impolite to name certain suburbs as dangerous. Let's just say most media reports name 'South West Sydney' as the least friendly area of Sydney, particularly for outsiders.

If you were travelling on Canterbury Rd, you would have moments of 'not feeling safe' anywhere west of the suburb of Canterbury.

Redfern also feels a bit hairy at times, but it is always on the brink 'of coming good again' as inner city people move there to try and save a bit of money. Good Luck!

Everywhere is safe. The south-western suburbs and far west are perhaps the least safe, but really you're OK anywhere.

As mentioned above, there are a few areas in Sydney that you just would not particulary want to live in if you are particularly concerned about safety, ie. in the south west and far west. However, from someone who grew up in the south west, I never really came across any trouble. There are just specific suburbs or even streets you might want to be wary of. So the question you would be better off asking, is where not to live. Perhaps post a more specific question when you have thought of an area you are interested in.

The east and inner west are quite lovely. I'm not a fan of the north (I have a psychological block where anything on the other side of the bridge seems on the other side of the world), however it is generally considered quite safe. You might just want to check on the particular suburb you have decided on as there are dodgy areas scattered all over, but they are few and far between.
