  1. Its not the place its the people!

Just be sensible, walk with others, stay in well lit public places, keep walking to a minimum and use taxis and buses etc, keep your phone charged and on, dont talk to anyone who you dont know.

  2. Edinburgh city centre is a fairly safe area to wander about in at night, unlike most other city centres in the in the UK which become deserted when the shops shut, Edinburgh has lots of pubs and clubs in and around the centre so there are always plenty of people about at night.

If you take the normal precautions, don't go alone into the small closes (alleyways) alone, stay out of the side streets, make sure there are other people nearby and you should have no trouble.

  3. in some parts of the bridges etc a lot of undesirables gather(alcohlics, drug users, neds, etc)they try and ask for money etc, mostly they are ok,but can shout abuse etc if you do not give them money, also some parts of old town, there are hostels for alcoholics etc,but they are generally pretty harmless, try and avoid closes in old town, they are narrow and dark,if you must walk up closes its safelty in numbers,in outer districts, wester hailes, muirhouse, drylaw, granton, niddrie, are best left alone, they are full of neds and other undesirables,as a thought, dont walk thru meadows alone at night!several women walking alone have been assaulted in past few years

  4. Edinburgh is pretty safe, the 'Bad areas' are generally on the outskirts of town and are set in schemes which were build in the 60's & 70's.

These are Wester hailes, pilton, niddrie, Oxgangs, stenhouse, saughton, gracemount and so on. However most of edinburgh city centre with a 5 mile radius outwards is pretty safe and generally the undesirables have been priced out the market.

I would say that most of the housing schemes which are closer to the city centre have been regenerated and are much better than they were.

The city centre is safe, however i would think twice about walking on the bridges, lothian road, bottom of the royal mile, king stables road & cowgate. The only reason behind this as these streets are made up of closes which are dark alleyways, so for pobvious reasons make it a little creepy!

If you stick to the rule of staying to well lit, well populated areas you will be fine. Edinburgh is a very safe city, and on the whole most places are safe as long as you keep your wits about you. The usual don't listen to ipod, dont talk on mobile, always make sure you know where you are going before setting off!

  5. Pilton, Niddry, Broom house, Burdiehouse, Sight hill, Westerhailes, Muir house, Leith. To name a few Oh and Lothian road at night or early hours of the morning.

  6. Edinburgh is one of the safest cities in the UK.

The undesirable areas are very far from the city centre.

In the Centre, Lothian Road and the Grassmarket can be a hotspot from drunken behaviour at weekends - but these areas are fine during the day and early evening.

Anywhere in the Newtown is very safe - george street, queen street and princes street.

    Hope this helps
