Versailles in actually in a Paris suburb, in the arrondissmont Versailles. You can't take a Metro, you have to take a RER train C5 to Versailles-Rive Gauche from the Paris stations Gare d'Austerlitz, St-Michel, Musée d'Orsay, Invalides, Ponte de l'Alma, Champ de Mars, or Javel stop, and take it to the Versailles Rive Gauche station. The trip takes 35 to 40 minutes. The round-trip fare is 5.50€ ($7.15); Eurailpass holders travel free on the RER but need to show the pass at the ticket kiosk to receive an RER ticket. From the station it's about a ten minute walk, I found it quite easy to walk from the station, and you can pick up a small tourist guide at the train station which usually has a small map guiding the city as well as the castle

Versailles is a separate town west of Paris.  You can take the RER, I think it's "C5" , from the Champ de Mars metro station (near the Eiffel Tower).  The train will take you to Versailles, not a long trip about half an hour or less.

Versailles is a town outside paris.. you can get there either by SNCF or RER C from various stations in paris eg la defance
