  1. Japanese and Mandarin can take you far. Mandarin is only spoken in China and Japanese is only spoken in Japan (Except for China town, Japantowns). If you are doing business with Japan, then Japanese will be more beneficial. If you are doing business in China, then Mandarin will be beneficial. It depends on where you want to do business.

  2. Actually, Hawaii is over 50% Asian.  I would say 80% of Asians are Japanese there.  That's like 40% of the population is Japanese. There, now you can speak Japanese in Japan and Hawaii.  But wait...

Michigan has over 10,000 Japanese residents in Wayne County, (near Detroit/Ann Arbor).

In the US, there are 796,700 Japanese-Americans, and 1,148,932 people that identify themself as being part Japanese.  .38% of our population is Japanese (which is a lot, this doesn't mean Asian in general).  These Japanese are also intermingled with the 4.4%.

This means about 1/10 Asians you meet is going to be Japanese.

So, you can use Japanese in the US, and in Japan.

Japanese is spoken in Brazil.  Brazil has the highest Japanese population outside of Japan! It's spoken in Singapore. It's spoken in Peru (Peru has a very high Japanese count).  It's even spoken in Taiwan.

There are plenty of places for you to speak Japanese. So, don't give up on learning it.

  3. As far as you are interested in, every language worth to learn.

Japanese is not easy but once you got out-frame of it, pronunciation is much easier than Chinese. You don't need to know so much Chinese characters for Chinese study either.

Chinese is very common all over the world because everywhere you can see Chinese restaurant. Your Chinese could be well enough useful to order the diner at there.

  4. Well it really depends on why you are learning and what your plans for the future are.

More people speak Mandarin than Japanese and Mandarin would be helpful if you plan on doing business with China. Japanese is good if you plan on doing business with Japan.

Do you plan to live in or visit China or Japan? I will tell you this much Mandarin is very difficult to speak. Japanese is relatively easy in comparison.

If you love watching Japanese tv shows and or anime then maybe it is better to learn Japanese. You don't get much chance to use it outside of Japan though but you probably won't have much chance to use Mandarin outside of China and Singapore either.

  5. Japanese is a terrific language to know.

If you want another, you already have the answer:  Mandarin.  That is, according to all language experts, the next, best language to know...going to be very useful in the future.
