Question:

What aspect ratio should I shoot in with a Canon GL2?

I've got a Canon GL2 and am faced with too many options...Here they are:

1. Shoot in 4:3 and keep it that way

2. Shoot in 4:3 with widescreen guides on and crop it in Final Cut Pro

3. Shoot in 4:3 and (somehow) conform it to a 16:9 sequence in Final Cut Pro

4. Shoot in anamorphic and just deal with the compressed picture on the LCD/viewfinder

I'd like to have widescreen footage, even if it's not true WS (options 2-4). What do you think?

  1. well, you are the filmmaker - the storyteller.  You decide.   If

Your intent is to tell the story in 16:9, then film it that way, so there is less cajoling of the image later.  It would be sad if you filmed in 2 or 3 and when you got to FCP, it did not work - requiring a re-call

  2. I would try shooting in anamorphic, and if that dosent work then just shoot in 4:3 and then put a matte.
